Niagara Square

I wake up every morning to a dog licking my face
coffee and the news and the world is in it's place
outside the sidewalk stretches the lonely streets are grey
past the stadium where the Blue Jays played that summer the pandemic closed the border
Niagara Square was the meeting place for frustrated hearts and riot gear
blood trickled out the ear of an elderly man
he was shoved to the ground by a pent up cop who had to cancel his big plans for the weekend
well I guess we all have our cross to bear
I guess we all have our cross to bear

Taking Shape

Swans like the cemetery lake
ironically they cant get away
from people asking them in their own way
"How can I be so free?"
We both get coffees but you're off caffeine
we both get doughnuts and feel guilty
we bond over our common vice that will one day stop our hearts
I've been working on my posture
and you're trying to lose some weight
it's taking longer than it should but we're trying not to say it
I'll stop playing you my new songs when you stop asking what they mean
and clouds roll on to bluer skies before taking shape to me
Our greatest accomplishment yet
hid at the table in the back
untroubled love and let them all scramble around
on the floor resting our heads
pure air don't come through these vents
too much sound to forget or to piece together now
I've been working on my posture
and you're trying to lose some weight
it's taking longer than it should but we're trying not to say it
I'll stop playing you my new songs when you stop asking what they mean
and clouds roll on to bluer skies before taking shape to me
Pink walls in a happy place
patched jeans with a smiley face
you snuck in with a cheese plate could have been a scallop shell
You've never tried to change my mind
it's just small bits of resign
we'll make it to our hilltop home too snowy to surmount
I've been working on my posture
and you're trying to lose some weight
it's taking longer than it should but we're trying not to say it
I'll stop playing you my new songs when you stop asking what they mean
and clouds roll on to bluer skies before taking shape to me

Officially an Emergency
03:42
|

To the detriment of another year
another year where fear might've stepped aside
to the detriment of another year
another year where fear might've stepped aside
to throw a pass
yelling "go long"
running on the lawn
drink riddled conscience
cloudy but present
yelling from a broken elevator between floors
thank god that we're alone
we may be here for hours
the seconds feel like hours
the seconds feel like songs
these seconds now seem wasted when you're not supplied
considering the amount of comfortable air
how did we get so worse for the wear
how did we get so sleep-walky
but here we are
the carpet hasnt been cleaned
the numbers on the buttons are nearly gone
some quick math will get us where we need to be
this is officially an emergency

Dice
04:03
|
|||
joking that you're always wearing hand me downs
well limousines haven't been coming round
if you couldn't tell
joggers taking cover neath the overpass
soaked to the bone maybe next time they'll check
the sky
with dice cupped in my hands
daddy needs a new pair of shoes
pints of strawberries stain my hands
summer 2001 that takes me back
to when we met
all the lead actors in this play
some have moved some have passed away
so take your bow
with dice cupped in my hands
I'm praying that my luck will change
expensive houses line the riverbed
they curse the geese and kill the plants and say
it's for the look
theres a swampy spot on down the road
we'll dip our hooks
drink our beers then go
nothing again
with dice cupped in my hands
this is the year my luck will change
first year of college started a band
we hated the war and the president
that's all you need
we had a space to let our anger out
who needs a melody when you can shout
to the hills
with dice cupped in my hands
lord just get me to the gig

We Promised to Ourselves
03:08
|

She leaned forward
wispered in my ear
"isnt this fun"
we wobbled a bit
our weight was thrown off
the bottle of Barbera didnt help
when we got home it was dark
the dog didnt seem to mind
she was just glad that we were back
we should do this again
we promised to ourselves
another thing to do in an endless future
we rode past our old house
it's a total eyesore now
your aunt Sofia would have had a fit
basil in the backyard
tomatoes on the vine
plums were ammunition for a fight
the rectory nextdoor
immaculate as always
who knows what's really going on
the barbershop downstairs
working men in chairs
know if you've crossed to this part of town

Big Game James

We found a trail from the graveyard to the river
free of beer cans and debris
there used to be a settlement
with a damn and a schoolhouse
tables where men could disagree
The steelhead don't spawn this far in autumn
we learned to leave our poles at home
stare real hard for movement in the water
a kaleidoscope in monochrome
